About our Birding Tours

For those of you who have not had the opportunity to discover Prince Edward Island, its beauty, its people, and its nature, you are in for a treat. The countryside, a diverse mix of river valleys, woodlots, farmland, estuaries, marshes, and sand beaches, has attracted more than 330 species of birds.  Eastern PEI is a rural landscape dotted with quaint, delightful harbour villages.

This tour is designed for the intermediate or beginner birder who would like to experience a wide selection of birds and diverse habitats, including freshwater and saltwater marshes, hardwood and coniferous forests, estuaries, fields, and migrant traps.

Your "home away from home" will be Forest and Stream Cottages and Country Charm B&B which are nestled on 20 acres of mixed forest just west of the fishing village of Murray Harbour. The property is host to a kilometer-long, spring-fed lake whose exit stream flows into a tidal saltwater flat. The lake is a magnet to birdlife, including Belted Kingfishers, Wood Ducks, Common Mergansers, Bald Eagles, and Great Blue Herons.

Blake Maybank
Blake Maybank

Exciting new birding tours are being planned for May 2009 and Sept 2009 with guide Blake Maybank

Blake has been birding in Canada and beyond for nearly 30 years. He has lived in seven of the country's provinces and territories, making his home at such well-known birding locales as Churchill, Manitoba, and Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. Blake worked for more than two decades for Parks Canada, holding the postions of Chief Naturalist in Gros Morne National Park, and Head of Visitor Activities in the Atlantic Canada Regional office. He now works as a writer, guide, and photographer.

At the local level Blake is the author of "The Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" and "The National Parks and Other Wild Places of Canada", and for several years owned and published "Canadian Birding" magazine.  He has written the Atlantic Provinces spring bird report for "North American Birds" for 20 years and is the editor of "Nova Scotia Birds"..  He was a member of the team that established the birding "Big Day" record for PEI -- 128 bird species in 24 hours, and as well he was on the teams that hold the records for Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia.  Blake maintains the Winter Birding web pages for PEI and Nova Scotia.

We are extremely happy and proud to have Blake lead these tours in 2009. Continue to watch this web site for more updates and details on these NEW PEI Birding Tours.

Here is a comment below from Rick Greenspun, birding guide, Sarasota FL.

Forest and Stream Cottages / Country Charm B&B offers everything a nature lover could ask for. Situated on 20 acres of mixed pine, birch & poplar, with a large private access lake, and cycling trails seconds away for your door.

Best of all is the birding. Expect to see, magnolia, yellow rumped, common yellow throat & even a mourning warbler if you are lucky. Hermit warblers, cedar waxwings, both black capped & boreal chickadees are common as well as white throated sparrows & ruby crowned kinglets. Visits by purple finches, gold finches, nuthatches & Juncos near the feeders are to be expected. Best of all you are 5 minutes from excellent wetlands & shore birding opportunities that include, whimbrels, godwits, various sandpipers, gannets, and a variety of gulls and terns. It is not uncommon to tally 40 – 50 species in one morning within a 5 mile radius. Secluded quiet & best hospitality anyone could ask for.
